Learn the basics of watercolour as you capture the beauty of summer’s flowers

DATE: Saturday, July 6, 2024
TIME:  10:00 am to 1:30 pm (3.5 hours)
LOCATION:  In-person @ Studio #206 on the upper level of The Alton Mill Arts Centre
FEE:  $150 + HST per person

Summer is a time of daisies, buttercups, cone flowers, day lilies and other perennial favourites that fill gardens, fields and hedgerows with tones of yellow, pink and white. Working with real flowers as our inspiration, this workshop will introduce you to the art of botanical illustration which is all about the accurate representation of flower and plant life.

Whether you are keeping a nature journal or simply want to learn how to make an artistic record of what’s growing seasonally in your garden, the tips and tricks you learn in this session will be provide you with some solid skills as you build your confidence.

For those new to watercolour we will cover an easy way to draw flowers, then how to “layer” them up with a series of colour “washes” before adding fine details. If you are more experienced and have taken floral painting before, then you will gain tips on things like brushwork, colour-mixing and how to create realistic petals, leaves and other floral features.

In the beautiful calm environment of my studio I will take you step-by-step through the process of creating several botanical studies so that you have first hand experience, plus examples to take home and continue practicing on your own.

Join me for this lovely summer morning of embracing nature’s floral beauty, then spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the beautiful grounds of the Alton Mill for more inspiration.

Paper and stretching boards will be provided. If you have your own watercolours and brushes you are encouraged to bring them along to work with during the class so that I can advise you on what to supplement them with. For newbies, all materials will be supplied.

This is an in-person workshop limited to only 5 participants which means you get lots of one-on-one help.
